Senegal
Parrot (So-quietus
You-never-know-its-thereus) Senegals are good apartment birds due to their quiet nature. They are relatively small birds when compared to other parrot species, but don't try to tell them that. What the Senegal lacks in size is made up in personality. When in the right mood, they can be very cuddly. |
Description Senegals are part of the African group of parrots known as Poicephalus Parrots. Their wild cousins can be found in central western Africa. The Senegal is a small bird measuring 9 inchesin length and weighing only 125 grams. |
Personality This is where the Senegal makes up for its unassuming size. Senegals like to have things their own way and will often pick on birds twice their size. Due to their head strong tendencies, it is in the best interest of the parrot owner to establish boundaries early in the birds life and be consistent in maintaining them. Senegals are a good choice for someone looking for a less demanding parrot. They are very independent and spend much of their time playing alone. |
Cuddle Factor While Senegals can be very independent birds, most will welcome interaction with their pet human. Senegals know that if a head scratch is good, then an overall body rub is better. Much like a cat, most will accept lavish attention for awhile and then suddenly let you know they are done and that they want to be alone again usually by pushing your hand away or walking away. |
Caging As always, the bigger the better. Senegals are playful birds and will welcome space to play with their toys. Toys made of wood and rope are usually preferred over acrylic. Many enjoy playing with smaller toys that they can hold. Rope swings are usually a big hit. Many Senegals like to chew on wood. This urge can be satisfied both through wood toys and by providing them with natural wood perches. Please remember to change the perches once they become soiled since wood cannot be disinfected. |
Noise Senegals are extremely quiet birds. Some will learn to speak a few words, but even then they are usually in a soft voice. Senegals are the ideal apartment bird. Your neighbors will probably not even know it's there. |
Food The eating habits of Senegals vary widely depending on the individual bird. Some will eat whatever they are given, while others can be extremely picky. Try to maximize your birds of eating a balanced diet by providing it with both a healthy seed mix as well as a pelleted diet and supplement with fresh fruits and vegetables. As always, try to avoid salty human junk food and stay away from chocolate, avocado and alcohol which are toxic. |

| Summary A small quiet but fearless bird with a big personality. Great for an apartment. |
